Waste not, want not, right?
Two random pieces of 1/8” inch 1095 carbon steel were just big enough to fit a small kiridashi design. Both knives were etched in ferric chloride and tumbled for 15 minutes with large ceramic media. They’re quite the scrappy pair.
Lesson learned: label your steel! And if the label is removed, re-label it immediately!
I had thought there were AEB-L stainless until shortly after I had plate quenched and tempered them. I had to redo the whole heat treatment process with proper heating and oil. I'm sure I wrecked the steel by subjecting them to a AEB-L heat treatment (about 500F higher).
I guess you call that an "unplanned learning experience".
