After a LOOOONG hiatus, I present the first knife of 2023.
No surprise here, it's a kiridashi-shaped knife. For many weeks I have been hard at work on a tutorial series and this knife was created to test some heat-treating ideas. The experiment went very well so I decided to finish it off with some materials I had handy.
This rugged utility knife features a very simple 1075 high carbon steel, filed by hand with a crazy simple jig, and gently tortured with a Dremel tool and carbide cutting bit. Not satisfied, I then brought it to my anvil and bounced a small ball-peen hammer toward to edge to add some interesting (maybe?) pitting effects.
The handle uses two Gabon ebony scales from Bell Forest Products. I do enjoy ebony. It takes to a rasp and files quite well. I did need to unleash my Dremel near the spine to deal with the unworldly abundance of epoxy that squeezed out.
